EU president urges Turkey debate

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has called, 22 June 2005, for a 'serious debate' about Turkey's membership bid to the EU. He said the prospect of Turkey joining the Union was partly responsible for voters in the referendums in France, 29 May 2005, and the Netherlands, 1 June 2005, rejecting the EU constitution.
