The European Commission on 12 July 2005 announced that it had decided to pursue infringement proceedings against Ireland in five cases involving breaches of EU environment law. In one case, Ireland had received a final written warning for not heeding a 2004 European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on the protection of the ozone layer. If Ireland was to fail to respond fully to the Court ruling, it could face a fine. The European Commission was pursuing four other cases concerning environmental impact assessment and noise. Meanwhile, the Commission was able to close two previously announced cases against Ireland following the provision of new information by the Irish authorities.
