Press Release: Emissions trading: Commission formally rejects UK request to increase emissions allowances

The European Commission on 12 April 2005 formally rejected the request from the United Kingdom to increase the number of CO2 emission allowances to be granted to UK companies, over the amount already approved by the Commission in July 2004. The Commission declared the request inadmissible as it fell outside the scope for amendments allowed by its decision of July 2004. Prior to the decision of 12 April 2005, the Commission had already conveyed its view that the UK request could not be accepted, both in meetings with the UK authorities and publicly.
