Security summit opens in Madrid

Preview and reports of a four-day summit in Madrid to examine ways of dealing with international terrorism, 8-11 March 2005, to coincide with the first anniversary of the Madrid bombings, 11 March 2004. More than 200 experts on terrorism from around the world participated in the international Summit. Debates were held in four thematic areas: the underlying causes of terrorism, how to confront the problem of terrorism, democratic answers to terrorism, and the role of civil society. Conclusions reached at the Summit were incorporated into the Agenda of Madrid, which was published on the 11th of March.
