On 7 January 2005 Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer embarked on a four-day tour of the tsunami disaster region that would take him to Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Speaking in Thailand at the beginning of his tour, Fischer noted that the German government wants to assume a long-term commitment in the region: 'We are willing to strengthen our relief efforts, particularly with regard to reconstruction'. |
