Chirac argues against NATO post-handover role

In a statement released on 28 June 2004, the first day of the two-day NATO Summit in Istanbul, NATO leaders agreed to assist Iraq with the training of its security forces and invited NATO members to contribute to the training. French President Jacques Chirac was told the news only when the Summit was about to start and said France was ready to train military police but only outside Iraq.
