Brussels dismisses attack on EU policies

Ahead of an Ecofin Council in Brussels on 16 November 2004, UK Finance Minister Gordon Brown has attacked the purchasing policies of other Member States, using a Treasury-commissioned report by Alan Wood, Chief Executive of Siemens, to support his case. Mr Wood had been asked by Mr Brown to investigate British business experiences of competing for public contracts in other EU countries. The European Commission has rejected Mr Brown's claims and accused the UK of not always maintaining a level playing field for public procurement.
