Speech: The Netherlands: Drawing strength from diversity (Speech during the opening of the ‘Garden of Religions’ in Turkey)

Speaking at the opening of an inter-faith centre on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, Minister for European Affairs Atzo Nicolai discussed the importance of freedom of religion in Turkey and the EU. Nicolai argued that that diversity of traditions is a source of strength. Excluding Turkey because of the faith of the majority of its people is therefore unacceptable. According to Nicolai embracing European values will help Turkey achieve full freedom of religion. Nicolai visited Turkey in preparation for the European Council on 17 December, which will decide on whether to start accession negotiations with Turkey
