David Blunkett, the UK Home Secretary, announced on 24 February 2004 that the number of people applying for asylum in the UK fell by 41% in 2003. The rightwing pressure group MigrationWatch UK said the UK would continue to be the largest recipient of asylum seekers until failed claimants were successfully ejected.
