‘Schmallenberg’ virus: Likely epidemiological scenarios and data needs

The European Commission, in January 2012, requested urgent scientific and technical assistance from the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) for possible risks resulting from the 'Schmallenberg' virus. This virus, which mainly affects sheep but can also affect cattle and goats, results in birth defects. To date, the virus has infected animals in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
