The Irish Presidency of the EU hosted a conference, 'Territorial Cohesion, Meeting New Challenges in an Enlarged EU' at the Connemara Coast Hotel, Na Forbacha, Galway from 25-27 May 2004. The conference focused on issues that are critical to the continuing development of those areas of the EU with recognised territorial constraints, such as islands, mountainous regions and sparsely populated areas. It also focused on urban and rural interactions and interfaces. Building on the recently published 'Third Report on Economic and Social Cohesion', the conference presented analyses and proposals on the strategies necessary for sustainable development in an enlarged EU and on relevant national, regional and Community policies. |
