Press Release: Eligibility restrictions imposed on council housing and help for homelessness assistance to EU migrants

The UK Government, on 30 April 2004, amended the rules on access to council housing and homelessness assistance in England by nationals from countries within the European Economic Area (the EU, plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein). The amendments were intended to ensure that people would not be able to come to the United Kingdom solely to abuse the social welfare system following EU enlargement on 1 May 2004.
