Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank, has sent an open letter to the Italian Presidency of the European Union, rejecting proposals that could make it easier for governments to appoint members of the Bank's executive board. Mr Trichet is concerned about a move that could potentially undermine the ECB's independence.
