The UK Foreign Office is to object to the US Government about its decision to try six suspected al-Qaeda terrorists in military tribunals that could hand down death sentences. Two of the six suspects are British citizens. The European Commission warned on 4 July 2003 that the application of the death penalty to any of the 600-plus suspects detained in Guantanamo Bay risked undermining international support for the US-led war on terrorism.
