The European Commission unveiled on 21 May 2003 an Action Plan for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) to combat the growing problem of illegal logging and the related trade in illegally harvested timber. Measures set out in this Plan include support for improved governance in wood-producing countries, voluntary partnerships with wood-producing countries to ensure only legally harvested timber enters the EU market, and efforts to develop international collaboration to combat the trade in illegally harvested timber. Ciaran O'Connor, the architect who designed the Commission's new Food and Veterinary Department outside Dublin, is facing criticism from environmentalists over the use of 2.7 cubic metres of iroko wood in the building. Mr O'Connor maintains he tried in vain to ensure the iroko he used was not the product of illegal logging. |
