In a move largely driven by France and Britain, G8 leaders have agreed to move towards the implementation of plans to create an African peacekeeping force. In a separate move, the French President, Jacques Chirac, has promised to use his influence to persuade the forthcoming European Union Summit to contribute €1bn a year over the next five years to the fight against AIDS.
