EU costs deal avoids delay for new members

The European Parliament voted on 9 April 2003 to support enlargement of the European Union to 25 countries after Member States promised an extra €540 million for the extra expenditure to be incurred in admitting the ten new countries. The Accession Treaty will be signed at a special meeting in Athens on 16 April 2003 and will come into force once it has been ratified by national parliaments.
