Van Rompuy against Turkey membership

Herman Van Rompuy, the Belgian Prime Minister who became the forst President of the European Council, November 2009, is a firm opponent of Turkey’s EU membership bid, according to a speech he made in 2004.

“Turkey is not a part of Europe and will never be part of Europe,” Mr Van Rompuy said during a meeting held at the Belgian parliament in December 2004.
