Press Release: EU asylum fingerprint datbase begins operating today

A new EU wide database (EURODAC) which would record the fingerprints of asylum applicants and certain categories of illegal entrants, was launched on 14 January 2003. This would allow immigration officials to check whether someone had already claimed asylum in another EU country, or if they were a failed asylum seeker or absconder.
