In an interview with the French newspaper 'Le Monde', Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, described the rules underpinning the single currency (the Stability Pact) as stupid. Mr Prodi's comments stunned European Finance Ministries most of which have implemented policies to comply with the Pact's strict limits on government borrowing. |
