In the United States the citizens of Oregon are due to vote on 5 November 2002 on an initiative that would require special labels to appear on any food produced, sold or distributed in Oregon that contained genetically-engineered ingredients. It is the first such food labelling measure to appear on a state ballot. If approved, the initiative, known as Measure 27, would mark a significant shift for the regulatory environment for genetically modified foods which to date have not faced any significant public opposition or strict regulation in the US.
