According to the Transition Report 2002 published by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in May 2002, the countries of central and eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States grew by 4.3% in 2001, outperforming most other emerging markets, the European Union and the United States. The report predicts the region's growth will continue in 2002 at 3.3% .
