Article previews a decision due to be announced on 21 June 2002 whereby UK motorists rather than car manufacturers will be forced to pay for recycling their old cars, saving the industry up to £37m a year. The measure is expected to come into force early in 2003, leaving motorists to meet the costs of recycling their old cars until 2007 when the End-of-life Vehicles Directive requires manufacturers to meet the charge.
