Proposals for asylum seek common basic EU standards

Under proposals published on 19 June 2002, all 15 Member States would have to offer asylum seekers common basic standards for processing their applications. European Union leaders are due to discuss the complex issues of asylum and immigration at the European Council in Seville on 20-21 June 2002. The plans are a modified version of a draft law rejected by EU leaders at the European Council in Laeken in December 2001.
