Commenting on the European Council, which was about to take place in Brussels on 24 and 25 October 2002, the UK Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, said that the main objective of the summit would be to secure agreement that the ten candidate countries (namely Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) could become full members of the European Union in 2004. |
