The European Commission adopted a decision on 13 September 2002 to support the peace process in Sri Lanka under its Rapid Reaction Mechanism. Following the February 23 Cease Fire Agreement, the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) formal talks will begin in Thailand on 16 September 2002 on further steps to be taken in the peace process. The European Commission's Decision is timed to coincide with the start of these talks.
