Speech: The official development assistance of the EU after the next enlargement: Basic trends, financial flows and opportunities for entrepreneurs and NGOs

The EU currently provides about 50 per cent of global development assistance and enlargement is expected to further enhance the EU's role as one of the primary actors in international development.

The speech by Dr. Francisco Granell, Principal Adviser to the European Commission, provides an overview of the scope of the EU's development policy and the impact of enlargement on such policy; discusses the financial flows from the EU to developing countries and the implications of the enlargement on the financial aspects; and discusses the role of non-state actors and the opportunities for enterprises and NGOs in this field.

The future Member States support the objectives and instruments of the EU's development policy. The accession countries will take part in the cooperation, partnership and association agreements of the EU; contribute to the European Development Fund; and, from the date of their accession, take on the rest of the EC's trade acquis, offering preferential trade access to developing countries.
