Engineering workers in Germany have been urged by EC officials to show restraint in their pay claims to help resolve industrial action. The call for moderation followed strike action by an estimated 60,000 workers on the 6 May 2002, which was the country's first major strike since the mid-1990s. The main fear in the European Commission is that the strike could spread, with similar action taken across the Union.
