Abstract:

This short article has been adapted from a talk given by the author at a colloquium held in Madrid on 25 October, 2001 entitled 'Present and future of the Court of Justice of the European Communities' at which one of the subjects was the representation and defence of a Member State before the Court. The colloquium was held to mark Spain's 15 years in the European Community. This article covers the organisational set up in the United Kingdom and the UK's approach is illustrated by reference to a number of cases.
