Book abstract:

This is an annual selection of articles which focus on developments and debates in social policy in the UK, Europe and internationally. Its policy approach continues to be different from that found in other academic journals. Chapters are specifically chosen to review a varied and interesting selection of social policy developments in Britain and internationally, and set current policy developments in a broader context of key trends and debates. The work opens with a review of the year in social policy by the editors from Labour's election promise to improve public services to the increased focus internationally on issues such as immigration and terrorism. This review is followed by three distinct parts examining developments in the UK, internationally and conceptually. Topics include: Devolution in England: the role of primary care groups; revolutionising care for people with learning difficulties and on the international front; European migration policy in Europe and the EU's social policy focus. The 'Conceptual section' has essays on Green social welfare, the politics and economics of disciplining an inclusive and exclusive society and the use of social capital in the policy context. The work will attract social policy lecturers, students, researchers and policy makers. Robert Sykes is Principal Lecturer in Social Policy, School of Social Sciences and Law, Sheffield Hallam University. Catherine Bochel is Senior Lecturer in Social Policy in the Department of Policy Studies, University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. Nick Ellison is Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Durham.
