Ten years ago the Almeria region of southern Spain was largely uninhabited, infertile desert. Now under cover of plastic, tomatoes, melons and peppers grow all year round in Almeria, to eventually fill supermarket shelves from France to Finland. This has made the area wealthy but it also has negative consequences.
