Book abstract: This book is published by the Federal Trust, whose aim is to enlighten public debate on federal issues of national, continental and global government. It aims to provide an overview of Belarus ten years after independence, and comments upon its relationships with its neighbours, internal developments and how the EU might develop its policy towards Belarus. Following a short introductory chapter which gives the historical background, the book moves to the first of its four parts. This addresses the internal political scene and covers political leadership, human rights, the media and Belarusian values and attitudes. Part two looks at the economy. International relations are featured in part three with particular emphasis on the Russian question and the part that will play in Belarusian relationships with the EU and vice versa. This is examined more closely in part four together with other detailed examination of the EU's relationship with Belarus. The editor closes with some personal observations on the way forward for Belarus and asserts the view that increasing democracy will be a major factor in that development. The work will interest students, scholars, researchers and policy makers engaged in the fields of EU studies, EU enlargement and international affairs. Federal Trust books are distributed by Kogan Page. |
