European Union finance ministers reached agreement on 15 October 2001 on tougher money-laundering laws that could be used to fight terrorism. A compromise text governing the professional secrecy of lawyers and their clients was agreed, but lawyers will have to report their clients if they know they are engaged in laundering. Rules on record-keeping and reporting of suspicious transactions have been extended to accountants and auditors, real estate agents, notaries, casino owners and fund transporting companies.
