The European Court of Justice on 29 October 2001 overturned an interim decision by the European Commission that a US company, IMS Health, should, under licence, allow rivals to use its system for collecting data on pharmaceutical sales in Germany. In July 2001 the Competition Directorate of the European Commission had ruled that IMS had to license the system because its dominant position in the German market hurt its competitors.
