Baron Alexandre Lamfalussy's proposals for a powerful new European Union securities committee to speed financial services legislation ran into opposition in the European Parliament on 27 February 2001. When he appeared before the Parliament's influential Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee Mr Lamfalussy was left in no doubt that legislators thought his plans ran counter to Parliament's interest.
