Pascal Lamy, European Commissioner for Trade, said on 18 September 2001, that the terrorist attacks in the United States made it even more imperative that the World Trade Organisation ministerial meeting due to be held in Doha, Qatar, in November 2001 go ahead. The EU and US hope that the meeting will agree an agenda for a new round of global trade liberalisation, but trade diplomats fear that the meeting may not now be held, especially if the US is involved in military action in the region.
