Press Release: Road transport: Commission moves to ensure uniform enforcement of driving times and rest periods.

The European Commission proposed simplifying social and safety legislation in the road transport sector in order to improve compliance on 17th October 2001. The race for competitiveness is causing some operators to flout the basic rules, so the Commission plans to give the European Union effective legislation which clearly defines driving times and rest periods, and facilitates enforcement with the aid of a system of effective penalties.
