Press Release: Free circulation of judgments on parental responsibility: an essential element for the protection of children in Europe

The European Commission adopted a proposal on 6 September 2001 that establishes the fundamental right of children - of married or unmarried couples - to maintain relations with both parents even when parents decide to reside in different parts of Europe. This proposal for mutual recognition of judgements on parental responsibility establishes for the first time a clear legal framework for jurisdiction and recognition and enforcement of those judgements throughout the Community.
