At a press conference on 30.3.01, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallström reacted to statements from the US administration that it would be abandoning the Kyoto protocol. She stressed that the EU was willing to discuss American concerns in an open and serious manner. She announced that she would go to the United States, as part of the Troika, on 2.4.01 to discuss the situation. She also stressed that the United States must understand that this was not a marginal issue for the EU and that it had implications for external relations including trade and economic affairs. |
