Press Release: Transport: the Commission formulates the political guidelines of the White Paper on the future of the common transport policy

The European Commission adopted the policy guidelines of the White Paper on transport policy on 18 July 2001. These guidelines form the basis for around sixty proposals that the White Paper details when formally adopted in September 2001. The aim of this document is to provide the European Community with a programme of actions to gradually decouple transport growth and economic growth. The approach recommended is to support rail, maritime transport and inland waterways to allow the market shares of each of them to return to the level of 1998 by 2010 in order to achieve a rebalancing between the modes.
