Ideas for improving car design to reduce pedestrian death and injury were explored at a European Commission public hearing held in Brussels on 6 February 2001. The Commission expects car manufacturers to respond to this hearing by proposing ambitious pedestrian safety test standards to be established by agreement. The Commission is prepared to assess the feasibility of such a negotiated approach as part of its overall strategy for simplifying the regulatory environment but does not rule out a legislative approach if negotiations fail. Participants at the hearing included Members of the European Parliament, Member States' experts and stakeholders, including car manufacturers and consumer organisations. |
