In a speech on 26 October 2001, at the start of a UK tour to promote the benefits of European Union membership, Peter Hain, the UK Minister for Europe, said that Eurosceptics were 'fundamentally unpatriotic' because they wanted to take Britain out of the EU. Mr Hain went on to repeat Prime Minister Tony Blair's statement in September 2001 that the government would seek to win a referendum on British membership of the euro during this parliament if five economic conditions were satisfied.
