Summary: Northern Ireland’s First Minister, David Trimble, has called for an end to “excessive” bureaucratic European Union structures. Speaking in Brussels, he said the institutional framework set up in the 1950s was no longer capable of coping with the challenges of the modern world or enlargement of the Union. Trimble said he was in favour of more cooperation between member states and that he looked forward to Northern Ireland playing a "full role" in the EU. But, in a reference to the forthcoming launch of the euro, he argued against Europe becoming a superstate to rival America. |
