Secular rally targets Turkish PM

Some 300,000 people demonstrated in Turkey's capital, Ankara, 14 April 2007, to demand that religion and politics should be kept separate in their country. The rally came two days before the 2007 presidential election process began and was intended to pressure the current PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to stand. Mr Erdogan said he would announce his decision on the 18 April 2007. On the 24 April 2007 Abdullah Gul, Turkey’s Foreign Minister, was nominated as the government’s candidate for the Presidency.
