The Mediterranean is the third most important fishing region for EU-25 Member States after the Northeast Atlantic and the Eastern Central Atlantic. However the catches in the region have declined by 28% in the period 1993-2004. 83% of the catches are in the western Mediterranean. Turkey is by far the major fishing nation in the Mediterranean.
