The number of new HIV infections within the European Union has risen by nearly 40 per cent in the past five years and nearly a third of those who are HIV positive do not know it, according to statistics released October 2006 by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
On 2 and 3 October 2006 ECDC hosted a meeting of national HIV/AIDS coordinators from across the EU, EEA/EFTA countries plus Bulgaria and Romania. The objectives of the meeting were to review country priorities on HIV prevention, share best practices, and identify areas where ECDC and other European level bodies could best contribute to the strengthening of HIV prevention in Europe. The meeting also enabled participants to share information on important new HIV prevention initiatives and innovative approaches.
