Sergey Stanishev, Bulgaria’s prime minister, rejected criticism, 6 September 2006 of his country’s record on fighting corruption and organised crime and warned that any attempt by the European Union to isolate his country’s legal system could backfire. He also rejected suggestions his country’s 7.7m citizens were preparing for a massive westward migration when Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
