The EU will spend a greater proportion of its budget on research and development following the adoption, June 2006, of a report on the 7th Framework Programme in the European Parliament. Although MEPs would have preferred to see a larger amount spent, the House supported a budget of more than €50bn for 2007-2013 which is a considerable increase compared to the previous research programme. Parliament also set out criteria for the financing of research using embryonic stem cells.
