Press Release: EESC hearing calls for a strategic goal of a diversified energy mix

An EESC hearing on 2 May 2006 on optimal energy provision for the European Union, resulted in a fruitful and at times heated debate on the EU’s energy mix, with the future of nuclear and renewable energy sources at its heart. The European Commissioner for Energy, Andris Piebalgs, supported state aid in order to promote renewable energy sources. The Economci and Social Committee was currently drawing up an exploratory opinion at the request of the European Commission on the topic.
