Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today met Ahmedou Ould Abdallah, UN Secretary-General Special Representative for Somalia

Mr Ould Abdallah updated Mr Solana on the political and security situation in Somalia and voiced his appreciation for the EU's efforts to combat piracy with its naval taskforce EU NAVFOR ATALANTA. He welcomed the further engagement of the EU in support of the people and
institutions of Somalia. Mr Solana, who was accompanied by General Pierre-Michel Joana, his Personal Representative for Somalia, commended the UN's efforts led by Mr Ould Abdallah with the backing of the international community. He stressed the need to address the root causes of piracy, which requires resolute and coordinated international efforts.
